Greetings GLSENeer,
PROP PREVIEW 2024!
We have 39 days until early voting begins in Arizona. Thirty. Nine. Days. Plenty of time to get yourself ballot ready. Figure out how you're casting your vote this year and ask everyone you meet how they’re planning to vote. Democracy takes everyone.
As noted here previously, Arizona’s ballot is going to be packed! Beyond all the candidates, there will be THIRTEEN ballot questions will be posed to voters – two citizen initiatives that qualified for the ballot and eleven legislative referrals written and placed on the ballot by Republican legislators.
For starters, there’s TWO BIG ONES on the ballot:
Prop 139, which would grant the right to abortion in the AZ Constitution, was cleared for the ballot by the AZ Supreme Court
Prop 314, which includes a grab-bag of provisions criminalizing border crossers, has been cleared for the ballot by the AZ Supreme Court
YOUR VOTE MATTERS! Register to vote here in upcoming elections!
Deadline to mail your ballot back for the 2024 Primary Election is Jul 18, 2024. Primary Election Day is Jul 30, 2024.
LEGISLATIVE SESSION
Also! Also! Also!
Prop 137, which would grant Arizona judges indefinite terms with virtually no public accountability, has been cleared for the ballot by the AZ Supreme Court
Prop 140, which would create open nonpartisan primaries, has been cleared for the ballot on constitutional grounds, and in an unusual decision, the AZ Supreme Court has allowed the proposition to appear on the ballot while a signature challenge is ongoing. If this final challenge concludes that not enough valid signatures were collected, the votes will not count. (PS, Prop 133, also on the 2024 ballot, would cancel out Prop 140. Go figure.)
WHAT YOU CAN DO?
In addition to learning more about the issues and candidates on the ballot, there are some important tasks to work on: Check your voter registration - make sure it’s at your current address. Continue to volunteer locally and engage your people. Keep asking questions and learning about who and what’s on the ballot.
UPCOMING DEADLINES:
The voter registration deadline is October 7 and early voting starts October 9, 2024. To request a mail-in ballot before Oct. 25, contact your county recorder. The last day to mail in ballots is Oct. 29 - after that, they must be dropped off at a vote center or polling location.
