Your GLSEN Arizona Inclusive Policy Postcard 8.17.2024

Greetings GLSENeer,

It’s that time of year again! Backpacks, school supplies, and new schedules have proliferated life lately as the Arizona students head back to school. And as of August 1st, the updates to Title IX went into effect, too; and all but one Arizona school district is expected to comply. As you may remember, Liberty Elementary School District voted 4-1 to not implement the updated rules and regulations that define sex discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity as sex discrimination and outlawed in education under Title IX.

YOUR VOTE MATTERS! Register to vote here in upcoming elections!

Deadline to mail your ballot back for the 2024 Primary Election is Jul 18, 2024. Primary Election Day is Jul 30, 2024.

LEGISLATIVE SESSION

Back to School in Arizona

Don’t forget your lunch – or that you have rights at school! Under Title IX, the federal rules schools have to follow to make sure no one is discriminated against, students have the right to:

  • Change their name, pronouns, and gender marker in the district's database and utilized in the classroom by peers and staff.

  • Use a sex-separated facility (e.g., bathroom, locker room, changing room) that corresponds with their gender identity.

  • Private and confidential Student Support Plan process to support LGBTQI+ students, including students who have expressed good-faith safety concerns

WHAT YOU CAN DO?

Schools should have policies and procedures that reflect the rights outlined under Title IX. Check out the GLSEN TItle IX Checklist to help review your school’s policies. Every school district has a person who is responsible for responding to complaints about infringements on Title IX. If you need help reaching out to your Title IX coordinator, we can help! Please reach out to GLSEN Arizona at policy@glsenarizona.org and we will be happy to follow up with you and get you connected.

Additionally, any Arizonan (including students, teachers, and other school employees) who believes their employer has discriminated against them because of their sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity may file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Civil Rights section.
