REFLECTIONS, NOW AND THEN...
The Summer of 1969 was 55 years ago and I have to wonder what that year felt like after a decade of countless assaults and assassinations. Liberties and freedoms must have hung in the balance as war raged in Vietnam; while civil rights and protest voices at home were routinely silenced with fire hoses and billy clubs.
By July 20, 1969, Americans were grieving the death of Judy Garland and the Stonewall Riots were still fresh in collective memory – happening just a few weeks prior. And yet, that same Summer, somewhere between Stonewall & Woodstock, America put two men on the moon and returned them safely to Earth.
In the midst of all that was occurring globally with added angst at home, a paramount achievement of space exploration was occurred. Depending on your time zone, the afternoon of July 20, 1969 was when Neil Armstrong first made footprints on the moon; and tonight, July 20, 2024 - 55 years later - that moon will be in full glow in North America.
In these times of fear and loathing, take a moment to gaze upon the heavens and wonder – what’s my moonshot? Breathe in the moon’s magnitude and dream of one’s own moonshot. In the midst of global rage and local scarcity, and wonder: what is my radical dream?
