Your GLSEN Arizona Inclusive Policy Postcard 6.8.2024

Greetings GLSENeer,

After passing HCR 2060, the Texas inspired illegal migration measure, the Arizona House passed SB 1511, the so-called detransition bill of rights. The LGBTQ+ Working Group and our allies are asking Governor Hobbs to veto it. She has until Monday, June 10 to veto it.

This week discuss the passing of HCR 2060 and SB 1511 and offer a up round of local and national news!

LEGISLATIVE SESSION

CALLING FOR GOVERNOR HOBBS TO VETO SB 1511

As a principle, we believe every person should be able to access the healthcare they need. Unfortunately, SB1511 has the opposite intent, perpetuating myths that gender affirming care is too easily accessed and that there are significant numbers of people seeking to medically detransition.

SB1511 is completely unnecessary, and indeed counter-productive, to ensuring the public receives access to safe and appropriate healthcare. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality’s (NCTE) 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, those respondents who had detransitioned and reported that they had done so because they realized that gender transition was not for them represented only 0.4% of the overall sample. Only 3% of respondents detransition permanently. When transgender people do detransition, they generally do so temporarily and because of the harassment and discrimination transgender people face, not because they were not transgender or had regret about their treatment.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

As a member of the LGBTQ+ Working Group, GLSEN Arizona has requested Governor Hobbs to veto this bill – and we need your support. Can you call her office now at 602-542- 4331 and respectfully ask her to veto SB 1511?

WHAT’S NEXT?

The Legislature is biding their time by meeting once a week and allegedly “getting close” to a budget resolution. We’re working to raise awareness about voter registration and upcoming voter education opportunities . Stay tuned and watch for more engagement information in the coming weeks!
