Your GLSEN Arizona Inclusive Policy Postcard 5.25.2024

Greetings GLSENeer,

GLSEN Arizona believes that every student has the right to a safe, supportive, and LGBTQ-inclusive K-12 education. The potential passage of HCR 2060 would be detrimental to those spaces and toward already marginalized students and their families.

This week we sound the alarm on HB 2060 and offer a up round of local and national news!

LEGISLATIVE SESSION

ARIZONA HOUSE WILL VOTE ON HCR 2060

HCR 2060 is nasty, cruel, and unnecessary. If passed by the House, HCR 2060 would go directly to the November ballot and, if approved by voters, would take Arizona back to the days of SB 1070 (the infamous “show me your papers” law), with far-reaching impacts. Given the many intersections of education, law enforcement, and public safety, there are many threats posed by HCR 2060 to our families and school communities.

Communities of color across the state would be at greater risk of harassment and arrest by local and state police. Law enforcement officers do not need certainty that a person is violating this law to arrest them – they need only probable cause (a “reasonable basis for believing that [the] crime may have been committed”).

At GLSEN Arizona, we’re working to build a world in which every student is valued and affirmed, period. According to the Williams Institute, there are over 75,000 LGBTQ DREAMers nationwide, and of that, 36,000 have participated in DACA. It’s imperative that we are creating safeguards for students, regardless of their immigration status, to thrive and learn. When fear and anxiety permeate the air around a student’s livelihood, structure, and safety, there’s a direct impact on their ability to learn and succeed in school.

It’s imperative that we learn from Arizona’s racist legislative past and not repeat another unconstitutional SB 1070 wannabe and put HCR 2060 where it belongs – in the trash. Once we know better, we do better. Let’s do better, Arizona.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

The House is voting on HCR 2060 on Jun 4, 2024. Contact both of your Representatives today and ask them to oppose HCR 2060.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Since the Legislature is biding their time by meeting once a week, we’re working to raise awareness about voter registration and upcoming voter education opportunities . Stay tuned and watch for more engagement information in the coming weeks!
