Greetings GLSENeer,
An affirming learning environment is absolutely necessary to ensure that LGBTQ+ students feel safe and accepted in the classroom. And it is absolutely necessary that our educators and schools feel empowered to provide it.
In this week’s Policy Postcard we discuss the very harmful bill SB 1166 and share a round up of local and national news.
LEGISLATIVE SESSION
SB 1166 FORCES SCHOOL TO OUT STUDENTS TO PARENTS & GUARDIANS
Schools have an obligation to provide safe and affirming learning environments for all students, regardless of their background, sexual orientation, or gender identity. This legislation attempts to release Arizona schools from that sacred responsibility by forcing them to out transgender students to their parents or guardians.
SB 1166 callously disregards any harmful consequences that may occur at school or home and endangers the lives of some of the most vulnerable among us.
SB 1166 further exacerbates the challenges faced by transgender students by forcing school staff to deadname and misgender them under the guise of so-called “parental rights.”
Forcing students to endure the wrong name or wrong pronouns, day in and day out, will further increase the alarming stats on depression among LGBTQ+ youth.
TAKE ACTION!
Contact your 2 Representatives and ask tell them to vote NO on SB 1166 to keep schools from outing trans and nonbinary students.!
WHATS NEXT?
If SB 1166 passes the House, it will head to the Governor’s desk. Watch out for our call for a veto from Governor Hobbs!
